Preparing for waxing

  • Exfoliate the area a few days before your session.

To prepare for your wax it can be helpful to exfoliate the area a few days before the wax if you commonly suffer from ingrown hairs. This is commonly helpful on areas such as the legs. Exfoliating the day before or the day of can be too rough for the skin and may make the skin more sensitive.

  • Book at least two days before your holiday.

Remember to book your wax two days before you go on holiday to allow the follicles enough time to close and for the skin to calm down.

After Care

For the first 24 hours after waxing, you should avoid the following:

Exfoliating the waxed area.
Saunas and steam rooms.
Exercise, gyms, and swimming.
Sunbathing, sunbeds, or any sunlight/UV exposure. Sweat can infect open follicles and heat can irritate the waxed area.
Applying products to the waxed area such as: deodorants, make-up, lotions, soaps, powders, perfumes, self-tanning products, etc.
Tight fitted clothing that may cause friction to the waxed area.

A soothing lotion will be applied after a wax service. For at home care, applying aloe vera to the waxed area can help soothe and hydrate the skin.

Contraindications for Waxing

  • Avoid sun/UV light 24 hours before waxing and avoid tanning beds 48 hours before waxing. Do not book waxing if you are sunburnt.

Sun tanning before waxing can irritate the skin even if the skin is not visibly burned. It is best to not tan for 24 hours before a wax. Waxing skin that has been exposed to sunlight for an extended period of time can lift the skin and lead to scarring. If you frequent tanning beds, it is best to wait at least 48 hours after tanning before getting waxed.

  • Discontinue the use of these medications for a minimum of 3 months prior to waxing:

Certain medications or topical creams can also be contraindications for waxing. Please consult your doctor if you are unsure. Discontinue the use of these medications for a minimum of 3 months prior to waxing, the only exception being Accutane; You must be off of Accutane for a minimum of 1 year prior to waxing.

If you are receiving treatment for cancer related illnesses such as chemotherapy or radiation treatment.
If you take blood thinners, have diabetes, phlebitis or want post- cancer hair growth in side-burn area removed. These all relate to medical conditions; please get your doctor’s approval before waxing.

Other things to take into consideration:

  • Menstruation can make the skin more sensitive during waxing.

Menstruation doesn’t prevent you from waxing but can make the skin more sensitive.

  • Inflamed/very red capillaries from people who smoke or have Rosacea.

If you smoke or have Rosacea, waxing can irritate dilated capillaries (weak or broken blood vessels) which are commonly found on people with Rosacea and smoker. If the capillaries are very red, avoid scheduling a waxing in that area.

  • Avoid caffeine/coffee and alcohol a few hours before getting waxed.

Stimulants such as caffeine or alcohol in your system can cause skin to be extra sensitive to waxing, meaning you could get more red or inflamed than usual. It is recommended to be sober of caffeine/coffee and alcohol a few hours before getting waxed.

  • Avoid powerful exfoliators.

You might be affected negatively from a wax if you use powerful exfoliators on the skin. Saliculic acid (found in some toners or skin clarifyers), alpha-hydroxy acid, white willow bark, white willow bark extract, and enzymes that strip cells from the skin. Too much exfoliation combined with waxing can make the skin red, bleed, or even scab over. Please do not use these products in the area getting waxed for at least three days before, and three to four days after waxing. (Depending on the strength of the product and the type of skin you have, the safest wait time for waxing may be much longer before and after. If the alpha-hydroxy is over 8% then you have to wait months before safely getting waxed.)
